Brand new beginnings... (July 2011)

Welcome to our new site! It's been a long time coming...
Ever since we left on our round the world bicycle trip, almost five years ago, we have struggled to keep this site up-to-date. Of course it had something to do with the fact that we wanted to discover the world and therefore didn't want to spend too much time in sparsely-lit internet cafes with dodgy electricity supplies, but also with the ever changing cyber world. When we set off in July 2006, the standard computer screen size was 800x600, now almost obsolete, and during the last five years we managed to squeeze all kinds of new gadgets, applications, films and flash players in this very small screen space. Up until now.

Because we are on a one year sabbatical from cycling (Sonya currently in Australia awaiting approval to start work in Saudi Arabia and Ali web building in Egypt), we finally had the time to undertake this massive project and refurbish the tour.tk site properly. It's not entirely finished yet, but the main pages are there, all the info is there and the lay-out is in place. We'll keep you up-to-date when we add new content or replace existing stuff.

So what's new?
Screen size width increased from 800 to 1024px * we've changed the navigation * links to the resources pages have been moved to the right side on every page and relevant links have been placed just above the page title * the main navigation is situated just underneath the clickable header/world map with logo * bigger fonts, easier to read * brand new slideshow on the on-the-road pages * there are comment boxes on pages where we would like to see feedback/suggestions/comments from visitors * we've added Twitter and Google+1 buttons on every page, as well as a Google Search bar * you can look up our adventures by country, continent, month and with the help of even more clickable maps * we have cleaned up the code... after five years it was quite a mess and this slowed down the site considerably * everything has been checked in five browsers, all links are working and we're very close to having the whole site W3C validated. We hope you enjoy it and please give us some (good or bad) feedback!

Sur place - a brake in travel

Cycling the Sinai: our last trip for over a year. We never really planned it, but that is how things are on the road and after 4 years and 9 months of cycle touring the world, we have decided to stop. What with circumstances as they are in the Middle East and Ali fracturing his ankle, we woke up one morning to the usual blue skies of the Sinai and said: Now is the right time to take a break. Not only do we still want to cycle through the Middle East, but we would prefer to do it when there is less tension. We also came to the realisation that our funds were becoming rather low. Though the contract has not yet been signed, it is highly likely that I will be off to teach English in Saudi Arabia. Ali will remain in the Saint Catherine to build up the web design business: www.sonali.tk It is going to be another chapter to add to our travelling story and sitting here in a little Bedouin brick house with goats bleating and big red mountains surrounding me, I feel quite happy to have my mind dawdle through all the amazing things we have experienced in the last years. Quite often, it is hard to put things into perspective while you are on the road. So besides padding up the bank account over the next year, we intend to write plenty more about cycle touring and travel in general as well as try to publish something that has been on the back burner for a while now. Food being one of our favourite pastimes, we have decided to put together a detailed eBook on the art of travel cooking. It will not only have plenty of tips and tricks regarding the travel kitchen, but be full of travel-smart recipes for cycle-tourers and anyone really planning to self-cater while on the road. Thanks to everyone who has supported us for our first 60,000 kilometres, we really appreciate it. And do come back here to check for our updates :-)

Long time coming

It is not like we haven't done anything, it's just that we didn't get to updating tour.tk... we've worked hard on other websites: www.bedouincraft.com - www.sonali.tk - www.marnixdenijs.nl and soem care on www.sheikmousa.com.

My ankle is almost better now; it had a bit of a shock after the first day of riding (133km might not have helped), but things are looking up and I can walk without pain again :-)

More on our trip and stay here in the Sinai soon... we've just finished February, photos for March coming up tomorrow, text a little later. See you soon on www.tour.tk

Greetings from Egypt

After having cycled almost constantly for the last three weeks, we finally found some time to put some more info on our site. There are updates on many cost of living sections of the country information pages, but what is more important, we finished the write up of November and there are tonnes of new photos from November (Tunisia) and December (Libya), especially from the ancient sites of Sabratha, Leptis Magna and Cyrene. Enjoy.
